Frederic Horspool was the son of George Horspool and Selina Elizabeth Hogg.

The following article by David Mahoney appeared in the Newsletter of The Hong Kong Branch Of The Royal Asiatic Society for the 20th December, 2002 concerning the awarding of a silver Belilios Star to F. Horspool.  Assuming the information to be correct Fred would have only been aged 11 at the time but the article only states that the award was hallmarked for 1884 and so possibly the medal was made and then inscribed and issued at a later date. No date is inscribed on the medal.

"Having acquired a named silver Belilios Star at a recent London auction, I have been persuaded to write an article on this rare medal, which is Hong Kong's own life saving award. This star, hallmarked 1884 - the year of its institution - is named to F. Horspool, who is thought to be Fred, the son of George,  who was a senior Hong Kong policeman in the late 19th century. By coincidence, the Star, in silver for lifesaving on land and bronze on sea, has not been awarded since Lee Wing-kee received a silver one in 1984. Although records of the awards since 1945 seem to be complete, very little material is available prior to that. Presumably all records kept by the Registrar General, the trustee of the Belilios Fund, were destroyed during the last war. I should be grateful for any information that members may have on the Star, its design changes, and past awards etc. in the period 1884-1945.

Frederic served in the Royal Engineers in Egypt during WW1 attaining the rank of Major. On his medal roll card his address is given as Sewage Engineers Office, Pearl Chambers, East Parade, Leeds,  or c/o Town Clerk, Leeds.

Frederic arrived in the UK at London aboard the Kaiser-I-Hind on the 24th June 1927 having embarked at Marseille, France. He travelled 1st Class and his proposed address in the UK was 8 Park Avenue, Leeds. His occupaton is given as Engineer and his last country of permanent residence was England.

Frederic arrived in the UK at Liverpool aboard the Duchess of Richmond on 13th May 1939 which had  sailed from Montreal, Canada. His age is given as 65 and his intended address in the UK is The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, 9 Gracechurch Street, London, his occupation is Civil engineer and his last country of permanent residence was England.
