Out of the dark and dreary streetOut of the cold and driving sleetIn to the church the folk had goneLeaving the orphan child aloneTatter'd and so forlorn was she,They crossed themselves as they pass'dTo see so frail a child in that grievous plightOn such a relentless and stormy night!Ora pro nobis, Ora pro nobisOra pro nobis, Ora pro nobisBanned by hoot of churlish owlInto the lone churchyard she stoleOver the grave where her mother layClasping her hands she knelt to prayMother thou in heav'n can'st hearThine orphan breathing her awful pray'rOh, take thy child! Oh, take thy child!Oh, take thy child to thyself again! The worshippers answered in sweet refrainOra pro nobis, Ora pro nobisOra pro nobis, Ora pro nobisIn to the cold and driving sleetIn to the dark and dreary streetOut of the church the people cameStarting aghast! as the sombre flameFell on the frail and slender formWhich knelt, unmoved by the moaning stormFor while they pray'd the angels had comeAnd taken the soul of the orphan homeOra pro nobis, Ora pro nobisOra pro nobis, Ora pro nobis
Records from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company show that there was a Mr. A. Horspool who was a chorister with Mr. D'Oyly Carte's 'D' Company between February and May 1885 and he reportedly remained with the D'Oyly Carte organization until 1887. Though not yet proven it would seem likely that this was Amos Horspool.
Amos died in 1922 at the age of 69 leaving his estate to his brother William.
